Bilan de la toxicité aiguë
Le thiabendazole possède une faible toxicité aiguë chez les animaux de laboratoire. Il est peu ou pas irritant et il n'est pas un sensibilisant cutanée.

Le thiabendazole est non génotoxique in vivo mais il a causé une induction d'aneuploïdie in vitro à des concentrations élevées.

Les études mécanistes indiquent que les effets observés chez les rats sur les hormones thyroïdiennes sont dus à l'induction d'enzymes hépatiques qui influenceraient la clairance de la thyroxine. Ce mécanisme serait spécifique aux rats. Cependant, l'EPA a classé le thiabendazole comme un cancérigène probable mais à des doses assez élevées pour causer une perturbation de la balance des hormones thyroïdiennes. Ce qui implique une perturbation possible de la fonction endocrinienne.

Bilan des effets à long terme

Lors d'études chez les animaux de laboratoire, le foie et la thyroïde étaient les principaux organes cibles du thiabendazole. On a observé chez les rats, une réduction de gain de poids corporel et une hypertrophie du foie ainsi que des adénomes et une hyperplasie des cellules folliculaires de la thyroïde. Selon l'EPA, le produit serait probablement cancérigène à des doses assez élevées pour causer une perturbation de la balance des hormones thyroïdiennes, mais non à de faibles doses. Le thiabendazole était non toxique pour la reproduction et le développement dans les études animales. Il n'est ni neurotoxique ni génotoxique.
