Bilan de la toxicité aiguë
Le chlorothalonil possède un risque élevé d'intoxication par la voie respiratoire mais il est faiblement toxique par les voies cutanée et orale. Il est corrosif pour les yeux et légèrement à modérément irritant pour la peau (catégorie III de l'EPA). Il n'est pas un sensibilisant cutané. L'EPA considère qu'il existe un risque d'irritation sévère des yeux jusqu'au 7e jour après l'application.

Dans le cadre du volet du processus de réévaluation des produits contenant du chlorothalonil portant sur la santé humaine, l’ARLA a utilisé des évaluations récentes du chlorothalonil produites par la United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Bilan des effets à long terme
Les études animales subchroniques, chroniques et sur le développement ont démontré que les reins et l'estomac étaient les principaux organes cibles. Les études de cancérogénicité chez les rats et les souris ont révélé la présence de papillomes et de carcinomes à ces mêmes organes. Le chlorothalonil est classé par l'EPA cancérigène probable chez l'humain par toutes les voies d'exposition (orale, cutanée et inhalation). Dans des études sur la reproduction et le développement des animaux de laboratoire, les petits n'ont pas démontré de sensibilité accrue comparativement aux adultes après une exposition in utero et/ou postnatale au chlorothalonil. Il ne serait ni génotoxique ni neurotoxique et il ne causerait pas de perturbation de la fonction endocrinienne.
