Bilan de la toxicité aiguë

Dans les études de toxicité aiguë, le captane n'est pas toxique par la voie orale et possède une faible toxicité par les voies cutanée et respiratoire. Le captan est un irritant très sévère pour les yeux et il peut causer des dommages non réversibles. L'EPA estime que dans certains cas, des incidents peuvent survenir jusqu'à 5 à 8 jours après le traitement. Il n'est pas irritant pour la peau mais c'est un sensibilisant cutané.

Types d'effets observés sur la génotoxicité	Le captane a été adéquatement testé pour sa génotoxicité dans un grand nombre d'essais, lesquels ont démontré qu'il était clastogène et mutagène in vitro mais non in vivo. L'EPA a déterminé que les effets cancérigènes se produisaient par un mode d'action non génotoxique.

Bilan des effets à long terme

Chez les animaux de laboratoire la cancérogénicité du captan est limitée par un seul type de tumeur (adénomes et carcinomes du petit intestin, principalement dans la portion proximale du duodénum) chez les deux sexes d'une seule espèce, la souris. L'EPA le considère comme probablement cancérogène à doses élevées et prolongées pouvant causer une cytotoxicité et une hyperplasie régénérative des cellules. Il serait probablement non cancérigène à des doses faibles. Le captane n'était pas toxique pour la reproduction et le développement dans les études chez les animaux de laboratoire. Il n'est pas neurotoxique et il ne cause pas de perturbation de la fonction endocrinienne.
