D'après certaines études, l'oxadiazon serait persistant dans les conditions environnementales habituelles . Il ne s'hydrolyse pas en milieux acide et neutre. En milieu alcalin, il s'hydrolyse avec une demi-vie de 38 jours à pH 9. La photodégradation dans l'eau semble constituer une voie possible de transformation avec une demi-vie de 2,75 jours. Au sol, la demi-vie de l’oxadiazon pour la réaction de photolyse est de 165 jours. Il est très persistant dans les sols en condition aérobie. Sa demi-vie serait estimée à 841 jours. Il est aussi très persistant dans l'eau en condition anaérobie (demi-vie de 365 jours), mais il est faiblement persistant dans l'eau en condition aérobie (demi-vie de 17,9 jours).

L'oxadiazon est légèrement mobile dans les sols avec des valeurs de Koc variant entre 1 409 et 3 268 ml/g. Son potentiel de lessivage, étant aussi influencé par sa persistance, est modéré. Il pourrait contaminer l'eau souterraine par lixiviation dans les sols très poreux. Les valeurs de pression de vapeur (1,0 x 10-6 mm Hg à 20 oC) et de la constante de la loi de Henry (4,51 x 10-7 atm m3/mol) indiquent que l'oxadiazon risque peu de se volatiliser à partir des sols ou de la surface de l'eau.
