Le clomazone résiste à l’hydrolyse à tous les pH que l'on rencontre normalement dans l'environnement. Il se dégrade lentement par photolyse en solution dans l'eau (demi-vie = 87 j). Il est faiblement persistant à persistant dans les sols avec une demi-vie variant de 28 à 173 jours en conditions aérobies, (moyenne de 80 j). Dans l'eau, il est modérément persistant avec une demi-vie de 79 jours en conditions aérobies et de 44 jours en conditions anaérobies, en système eau-sédiments. Le principal métabolite en conditions anaérobies est le N-[(2-chlorophénol)méthyl]-3-hydroxy-2,2-diméthylpropanamide qui peut persister dans ces conditions. Dans l'air, le clomazone est présent sous forme de vapeur. Il se dégrade avec une demi-vie estimée à 0,487 jour.

Le clomazone est légèrement à modérément mobile dans les sols (Koc = 139 - 608 ml/g). Son potentiel de lessivage est élevé. Il peut donc contaminer l'eau souterraine par lixiviation et l'eau de surface par ruissellement. Il est modérément volatil (1,44 x 10-4 mm Hg à 20 oC).
