Le chlorure de chlorméquat résiste à l'hydrolyse à tous les pH que l'on retrouve normalement dans l'environnement. Il ne se dégrade pas par photolyse tant à la surface du sol que dans l'eau. Il est modérément persistant dans les sols en conditions aérobies. Sa demi-vie par biodégradation varie de 30 à 43 jours. Il est faiblement persistant dans l'eau en conditions aérobies avec une demi-vie variant de 5 à 9 jours.

Le chlorure de chlorméquat est très soluble dans l'eau. Son Koc varie de 55 ml/g à 912 ml/g. Ceci indique qu'il est légèrement mobile à mobile dans les sols. Son potentiel de lessivage varie de modéré à élevé selon le type de sol. La valeur de sa pression de vapeur indique qu'il est non volatil (7,5 x 10-8 mm Hg à 20 °C).
