Comportement dans l'environnement

La matière active n’est pas significativement biodégradée dans les sols aérobies et anaérobies (demi-vie de 883 jours à 1444 jours en condition aérobie) et elle résiste à la photolyse en milieu terrestre. À l’inverse, le thiabendazole est rapidement métabolisé par les microorganismes aquatiques en présence d’oxygène (demi-vie de 1,6 jour) et rapidement phototransformé dans l’eau (demi-vie de 1,2 jour). Il est résistant à l’hydrolyse (demi-vie supérieure à 203 jours). Les trois produits de dégradation identifiés sont le benzimidazole-2-carboxamide, le benzimidazole et l’acide benzimidazole-2-carboxylique. La constante d’adsorption sur le carbone organique (Koc) de ce pesticide est de 1104 ml/g. Il est donc adsorbé sur la matière organique dans les sols et mobile compte tenu de sa persistance élevée. Il est non volatil à partir des sols humides et de l’eau selon la constante de la loi de Henry (H = 2,7 x 10-13 atm.m3/mol).
